Design & Development

Dana’s role in the development and production of new vehicles continues to expand as our customers’ needs change.  Our designers, engineers, and technical experts are increasingly involved with the design and development of modules and systems, such as power steering/water pump modules and independent rear suspension systems.  This includes full CAD responsibility, prototyping, and durability and program testing.

Dana can also go beyond design and development to complete program management, including project planning and Tier II sourcing.  For the Ford Falcon, Dana is providing complete supply-chain and inventory management.  The independent rear suspension system for the Falcon, designed by Dana and Ford, consists of 78 components from 27 suppliers.  (The finished system will also be delivered in sequence and just-in-time.)

Dana’s $6-million, state-of-the-art NVH test lab is
located in the Customer and Engineering Support Center in   The lab’s dynamometer has four-wheel-drive, 300-horsepower, 6,000-pounds-per-axle capacity.  In addition, an NC20 Hemi Anechoic chamber, which is one of the industry’s largest, ensures no reflection, no noise transmission, and no interference from the outside.  It also features an 85,000-cfm air handling system.

Crash Test Dummy PicturePredictive testing related to NVH can be done with the methodology and database used in the Dana Virtual Test Rig (DVTR).  The DVTR is used to predict fluid-borne noise in automotive systems by computationally combining the properties of each individual element to determine the total system’s performance.  With two of these characterization rigs – in Rochester Hills, Michigan, U.S.A. and Strood, Rochester, Kent, UK – Dana engineers can experimentally or theoretically characterize the behavior of new components and materials before they are installed in a vehicle.

Test Track and Durability Testing Support
(Ottawa Lake, Michigan, U.S.A.)Test Track

Dana’s Technical Resource Park (TRP) facilities include a test track and proving grounds of 330 acres and a wide range of test surfaces.  Mileage can be accumulated on the oval track, durability courses, or interstate and rural highways surrounding the TRP, depending on the customer’s testing needs.  Any vehicle from a lawn tractor up to a Class 8 truck can be accommodated.  The TRP offers around-the-clock, seven-days-a-week operation for fast accumulation of test mileage.

Reporting PC database capabilities are available. Collected data can be reduced into plots, charts, tables, or text form. Data can be mailed, faxed, or transferred electronically as requested. Specialized Services The TRP can duplicate driving routes using accelerometer, stress, and brake temperature profiles. This data can be correlated with durability routes on TRP roadways. The TRP can alter vehicles to accept prototype components. Piggyback and comparison testing are also offered.
